On the Table (May 10th-ish to May 23, 2021)

After a drought of game playing, Em and I are back at it! Here’s what’s been on the Our Meeple Overlord’s game table over the last couple of weeks.

Arkham Horror: The Card Game – The Forgotten Age.

This is perhaps the most brutal campaign in Arkham Horror: The Card Game, if only because it punishes you for things that happen outside of gameplay. Certain story elements give you trauma, and to my knowledge, you can’t completely avoid it. Anyway, I played as Ursula Downs, and Em was Agnes Baker. We…did not do well. As expected. I’m determined to actually master this campaign, but it’s brutal enough that it is the least fun I have playing Arkham, and I don’t even mind losing.

Dungeons & Dragons

We’re FINALLY back to playing in-person games of D&D, thanks to SCIENCE! Our party explored some ancient ruins and fought a bunch of animatronic supernatural creatures like skeletons and a lich. I think we are in Ravenloftland! What fun! Anyway, we leveled up, which is always rad.

Isle of Cats

Cats cats cats cats cats cats cats. I reviewed this one a while ago, and am happy to play it, but I think Em likes it even more! Em destroyed me with a score of 101 to my 56.

Race for the Galaxy

An old classic that I used to play back in the day and Em is just learning. We only have the base game, and I think that Em is finally understanding the iconography of the game to enjoy it. We played 2 games this weekend, and we each won 1 game, so it won’t be long before Em is consistently smearing me in this game.

Lanterns Dice: Lights in the Sky

Another one I’ve reviewed…it’s a nice filler game, and I think it’s the first roll-and-write I’ve played (besides Yahtzee, of course). I barely squeaked out a victory with a score of 32 to Em’s 30.

Coimbra

We hadn’t played Coimbra in a while…so much so that I forgot half the rules at the beginning. Still, I took off in an early lead and was ahead by at least 20 points for most of the game, only to lose by 3 points at the end. So. Close. Anyway, Em and I are both big fans of Coimbra, and it hits the table whenever we actually have time to play it.

Arkham Horror: The Card Game – The Innsmouth Conspiracy

We’re finally trying out the Innsmouth Conspiracy, which has been an experience. We played the first scenario and got crushed, though we realized that I was playing my character (Silas Marsh) wrong, so we replayed it and did much better. We didn’t even take trauma this time! Em’s playing as Gloria Goldberg again because she’s such a good character. We’re really looking forward to seeing where this story takes us.

And that’s what we’ve been playing. What’s on your table? Let us know in the comments, or find us all over the internet! Also, don’t forget that every Tuesday, from 10:30-11:30PM Eastern, I’m on twitch painting minis and screaming into the void. Come scream with me!
